How artificial intelligence is the key to unlock the future of humanity

As part of VinFuture Sci-Tech Week, the VinFuture seminar featured discussions that envisioned the future of AI with Vietnam’s potential contributions to AI research and development.

The seminar was held in Hanoi on January 19, 2022 with the attendance of leading scientists. Notable participants include Dr. Padmanabhan Anandan – Founder of AI Matters Advisors LLC; Dr. Bui Hai Hung – VinAI Research Center (a subsidiary under Vingroup); Dr. Vu Ha Van – VinBigData (a subsidiary under Vingroup); Dr. Albert P. Pisano – University of California San Diego; Dr. Jennifer Tour Chayes – University of California, Berkeley, and Dr. Xuedong David Huang – Director of Technology at Microsoft.

AI to become “key” element of worldwide economies

The increasing rate of AI adoption on a per-organization basis expresses significant progress of AI’s centrality across businesses and industries. As reported, over 53 percent of survey organizations have put forth approximately $20 million each to invest in AI technology.

In reality, AI is not new. Our daily use of online search, social apps, e-commerce shopping has already been executed by AI. The global economy recorded a sharp 270% growth in the use of AI over the last four years.

Dr. Xuedong David Huang, Director of Technology at Microsoft described: “For the last decade, AI has gradually evolved and become integral in every aspect of life such as self-driving car, digital assistants, smart home devices and health monitor.”

Indeed, the healthcare industry recognizes AI’s utilization value that directly contributes to advancements in the field. The demand for data input that allows AI to build solution models can be met since there are primary data sources in the healthcare industry.

“AI technology has been widely used in the medical field which provides aid in early prediction, decode medical scans to effectively detect cancer, which then enables doctors to intervene faster. With COVID-19 undergoing, AI will be used to execute identification and categorize patients,” Dr. Jennifer Tour Chayes evaluated.

In education and academia, deep learning technology has been constantly improved to develop translation programs and tools that can produce translated content with accuracy.

“AI has even surpassed humans in numerous aspects, supporting humans in different fields due to the inhuman ability to process the extensive amount of information,” Dr. Chayes admired.

Decades of perfecting computers’ abilities have ushered humanity into the age of controversy where even digital morality could be in question. Meanwhile, AI grows exponentially as intelligence agents span across digital and physical spaces with the birth of niche, specialized digital entities.

“The possibility of innovations that AI offers can be limitless,” Dr. Vu Ha Van elaborated.

AI–A new weapon against COVID-19

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the global population, humanity looks to AI as a beacon of hope in defeating the virus. Healthcare experts expect AI to evolve functions that support the forecast of future variants and even enforce the neutralization of future diseases.

“Soon, more pandemic would likely come and our scientist’s next mission would be inventing a powerful vaccine to fight back every virus known to man,” Dr. Drew Weissman from Pennsylvania University, United States, expressed.

Dr. Vu Ha Van anticipated: “AI could be able to effectively model new virus strains or species, which I hope could lead to practical results. In pharmaceuticals, the production cost of drugs requires substantial investments of time, capacity, and finance. The costly experimental phase would be more affordable, effective, and accurate with the help of AI’s computation capability.”

AI might be the definite solution in the effort to shorten the disparities in healthcare access between different groups in society.

“In any country that we could think of, healthcare is not provided equally and fairly. Thanks to AI and big data, local and global welfare systems can provide universal access to healthcare and medical services regardless of anyone’s socio-economic background,” Dr. Robert Green, an expert in medical and genetic disciplines (Harvard University, United States) informed.

Besides contemporary advancement, there are challenges that developing and third-world nations must resolve to adopt AI technology.

Dr. Albert P. Pisano, Head of Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego advocate for universal accessibility of AI: “To integrate AI into the economy remain a difficult feat in developing nations. So, we need to promote further investments by corporations toward supporting fragile societies having access to AI.”

Vietnam – The next “Silicon Valley”

Aside from technological superpowers like the United States, China, and India, Vietnam is known as a “rising star” of the Asia region. Possessing impressive potentials from facilities database and abundance tech talents, Vietnam can confidently pursue machine intelligence and become an attractive hub for international scientists.

Large domestic technology corporations are interested in investing in and building AI sources in addition to implementing AI projects. Many domestic companies as well as innovative start-ups, also tend to invest in AI and carry out as many new applications there are new business models.

“VinAI began its journey three years ago. Vietnam, as a market, has reached maturity in commercial demand for high-tech applications, AI research and development, etc. My desire is to deliver practical results and realize a better future for the Vietnamese people,” Dr. Bui Hai Hung, Director at VinAI Research stated.

International technology corporations and the world’s leading AI companies have opened branches in Vietnam to take advantage of well-trained resources to make products for their markets.

At the Vietnam-Australia AI Forum in October last year, leading scientists and engineers hold Vietnam in high regard as Vietnam’s contribution to the AI field broadens.

“Vietnam will become a global hub for AI development,” Mr. Bui The Duy, Deputy Minister at Ministry of Science and Technology affirmed.

AI advancements have turned into the frontier of modern technology. With an expedited pace, Vietnam’s AI industry awaits breakthrough development to join the world in resolving humankind problems head-on.
